First Meeting with Amang
The connotation of the word “Amang” is one of close kinship. Literally it meams ”father”, or older man.
Although Amang and my grandfather belong to different political parties, they were good friends so when my father began to show interest in public affairs, Tatang brought my father to Amang one day.
Daddy recalled:
“We had a talk and he asked me to run as assembly man or congressman in the province in my father’s town. I said that I could not do that because our town was very small and I didn’t think that anyone from there would have any sort of a chance against a candidate from the bigger towns of the district.
That was my father’s meeting with Amang Rodriquez, and he had declined the great man’s offer. Fifteen years and a world war later when another proposal was forthcoming, it was a little different.
